BHUBANESWAR: Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president KP Singhdeo will visit the diarrhoea-affected villages in Kalahandi district to assess the deteriorating situation.
Before that, Singhdeo will make an assessment of the implementation of Centrally-funded programmes at Berhampur, Bhanjanagar and Phulbani.
Criticising the State Government for its failure to properly utilise Central funds for the welfare of the people in backward districts which has led to diarrhoea outbreak in Kalahandi, the OPCC chief said that this is the sorry state of affairs after pumping in more than Rs 10,000 crore for the KBK region during the last few years.
Singhdeo alleged that despite the Centre providing funds, people of Kalahandi, Koraput and Bolangir districts are dying of various diseases because of consumption of contaminated water and lack of proper food. On top of this, the State Government has failed to appoint doctors to fill up vacancies. Over 76 doctor posts are vacant in Kalahandi alone, he said.
Though the Centre had launched schemes like the Pradhanmantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the State Government has failed to take advantage of it and there are no roads to many villages even after 62 years of Independence, he said.
The State Government has completely failed in the implementation of the Revised Long Term Action Plan (RLTAP) and give succour to the affected people, he said and demanded that immediate steps should be taken to tackle the situation arising out of the spread of diarrhoea.
