Kalahandi district administration targets to cover 3,83,721 hectares this kharif season.
Of this, paddy will be cultivated in 1,90,000 hectares (ha) with a target to harvest 40 quintals per ha. Irrigation water will be provided to 1,52,000 ha through different sources including 80,000 ha from Indravati project.
This was decided at the annual agriculture strategy meeting for kharif crop organised by the district administration recently. The meeting was chaired by Collector Govind Chandra Sethi.
In the wake of marketing problems for cotton, the administration has this year decided to reduce cotton coverage to 40,000 ha from the 46,000 ha cultivated in the last kharif season.
Farmers will be encouraged to take up organic cotton farming. There are also plans to increase cultivation of Sorghum, Bajra, sweet corn and aromatic rice.
As against the paddy seed replacement of 53,217 quintals during the last kharif season which was 51.11 pc of the replacement target of 100 pc, agriculture officials have decided to increase seed replacement to one lakh quintals this kharif.
For this, Deputy Director of Agriculture Kailash Chandra Behera said it has been aimed to increase seed production in 2,000 hectares of land.
