Modi seeks votes on development issue

Orissatv.in, April 5, 2009

Bhubaneswar: Gujarat Chief Minister and poster-boy of BJP Narendra Modi launched his Orissa campaign from Nuapara on Sunday. Unlike his party colleagues Sushma Swaraj, Rajnath Singh and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani, Modi canvassed for party candidates on development plank.

However, he accused Congress of neglecting the farmers and the poor and ridiculed ruling party at the Centre for promising rice and wheat at Rs 3 a kg to the poor as the commodities were already being provided at Rs 2 per kg in several states including Orissa..

''It shows the lack of concern and sincerity of Congress to mitigate the plight of the poor,'' he said. While farmers were commiting suicide in many states, not a single such instance is reported from states governed by the BJP, Modi claimed. Due to gross mismanagement of the economy, unemployment has assumed alarming proportions while many lakhs of people were being retrenchment because of the economic meltdown, he said. Referring to Orissa, Modi said BJP had emerged stronger in the state after the 'betrayal' by its decade-long ally BJD which broke the alliance unilaterally ahead of elections.

Similar betrayals in Gujarat and Karnataka in the past had bolstered the prospects of BJP, which not only overcame the crises but emerged victorious, he said, adding, the party would come out with flying colours in the ensuing Lok Sabha and assembly polls in Orissa too.

“Modi’s visit would boost the party prospects in Orissa ahead of the forthcoming election. Modi is the face of Gujarat in terms of the phenomenal development under his leadership in the state,” a party leader said.

BJP's Orissa unit president Suresh Pujary and party's Lok Sabha candidate for Kalahandi seat Bikram Keshare Deo were among those present While Modi addressed poll meetings at Nuapara, Bolangir, Brajarajnagar and Kuchinda, he was scheduled to speak at a poll meeting in Raikia. He would wind up his Orissa trip in Bhubaneswar in the evening.
