Rourkela, April 7: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi started his election campaign in Odisha on Tuesday afternoon urging the people to vote for the party nominees in the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.
The young leader was cheered a crowd of more than 10000 people as he went on to address a public meeting at Birsa Maidan here. A maximum day temperature of 44 degrees Celsius did not deter the crowd from attending the meeting. Gandhi highlighted the achievements of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre and said that the Congress was committed to work for the betterment of the poor and downtrodden.
Later, Gandhi was addressed another public meeting at Rairakhol. He was scheduled to address yet another public meeting at Sonepur and a road show at Bolangir before ending his campaigning for the day.
The Congress leader, who was to spend the night in Bolangir town, was scheduled to address an election rally at Baliguda in Kandhamal district on Wednesday.
After Baliguda, Gandhi will address another public meeting at Dharmagarh in Kalahandi district.
Congress leaders in the state were hopeful of that Gandhi's visit would to brighten the polls prospects of their party nominees in the 10 Lok Sabha seats and 70 Assembly seats in the state where polling will take place in the first phase on April 16.
