BHUBANESWAR: There was no sign of any let up in the sweltering conditions across the State though some parts experienced thunder squalls on Monday. Instead, the mercury rose on the hot plate of Orissa with Titlagarh recording a new high of the season - 46.2 degree Celsius.
T he India Meteorological Department (IMD) which had forecast an abatement in the situation starting today said the conditions will continue for sometime.
I nterestingly, the heatwave displayed various trends. In the coastal parts there were signs of temperature declining whereas in the western and interior areas, it continued to rise.
T alcher was equally hot at 46 degree Celsius. Both Talcher and Titlagarh towns had experienced a rise in day temperature along with other places like Balangir, Angul, Bhawanipatna and Hirakud where the day temperature hovered between 44 degree Celsius and 45 degrees.
A cross western and interior Orissa, the hot conditions remained unchanged as coastal Orissa saw a temporary fall in the temperature. In the Capital, the highest day temperature dropped to 38.8 degree C as against 40.6 on Sunday. The coastal towns like Cuttack, Chandbali and Balasore saw a dip in mercury.
‘‘There are reports of thunder squall in Baripada and Jajpur which may result in a decline in the temperature,’’ Director, IMD, Orissa SC Sahu said.
Weather office said, a north-south trough extending from east Uttar Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu with embedded cyclonic circulation and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal may lead to rain and thundershowers. Occurrence of thunder squall and hail over West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa during the next two to three days is likely too.
Meanwhile, the unofficial sunstroke casualties stood at 125 today with one more death reported from Bhubaneswar where Maheswar Rout (26) fell unconscious in Laxmi Sagar area and was rushed to Capital Hospital where he succumbed.
The Government has confirmed only 31 deaths so far.
