Rejecting allegations that the Congress has failed to perform under his leadership in the State Assembly, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh on Monday asserted that he as well as his party, the Congress, are playing the role a constructive Opposition in the House.
“I and my party MLAs have raised so many issues, including the growing Leftwing insurgency-related violence, Bargarh rape case and law and order situation in the ongoing Budget Session, and we are fighting against the misdeeds of the BJD Government,” he said. “As an Opposition party, we have been trying to play a key role in the development of the State, besides opposing the anti-people policies of the State Government,” he said.
Singh, who represents the Narla Assembly constituency of KBK district of Kalahandi, rubbished any kind of differences among the party MLAs, saying the Congress is a united house in State Assembly.
“We are a united house fighting against the Naveen Patnaik Government,” he said, adding that vested interest groups are creating all trivia. “AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and other senior party leaders have been watching my performances in various capacities, so it is up to them to decide,” he said, when asked about his possible removal.
The Congress is the main Opposition party in the Assembly with legislators. The party had 38 MLAs in the previous Assembly. Former Chief Minister JB Patnaik was the Leader of Opposition in the previous Assembly before he was replaced by senior tribal leader Rama Chandra Ulaka a few weeks before the last elections, in which Ulaka was defeated from his Rayagada constituency.
