Sub:- Renaming Government Engineering College Kalahandi

Dear honorable chief minister, Mr. Patnaik,

We learn that people of Kalahandi feel that great leaders and intellectuals from the region are not well recognized by the Odisha state Government. Odisha state Government has named Medical/Engineering Colleges/University in Berhampur, Samablpur, Cuttack and Balasore regions after those great leaders of Odisha from those regions, but in case of Kalahandi it was not done.

Professor Bhubaneswar Behera was among the well known Engineers in Odisha/India and was born in a small village in Kalahandi. His contribution towards building Hirakud Dam, and as first principal of REC Rourkela , former Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University and former member of UGC is well recognized in India . In many different occasions he had represented India/Odisha and was also a well known story teller in Odia literature. He took a pioneering role by proposing upper Indravati project in Kalahandi in pre-independence period to the former Maharaja of princely state of Kalahandi. We request you to rename Government College of Engineering Kalahandi after this great son of the soil as “Professor Bhubaneswar Behera Institute of Technology & Management (BBITM)” by including management course in the proposed engineering college.

Former Maharaja of Kalahandi Pratap Keshari Deo had continuously worked for agricultural development of the region and he represented Kalahandi Lok Sabha constituency for 30 years. His struggle and initiative to make upper Indravati project possible in Kalahandi is well established from pre-independence to post-independence period of India . The credit for green revolution in Kalahandi solely goes to this great leader. People of Kalahandi will be very happy if the proposed agriculture college in Bhawanipatna is renamed after this great leader as “Maharaja Pratap Keshari Deo Institute of Agriculture Sciences (PKDIAS)”.
