Vedanta Aluminium Limited (VAL) has launched a programme to provide eye screening services to schoolchildren in Lanjigarh block of Kalahandi district. The programme will cover all the schools in 21 Gram Panchayats in the block. It is being implemented in partnership with the LEPRA Society and the district administration and expected to benefit more than 10,000 children.
To initiate the project, a one-day Training Programme on Primary Eye Care Services was held on June 29. More than 70 Headmasters of schools of the block attended this sensitisation programme, which was inaugurated by VAL COO Dr Mukesh Kumar. He observed that the programme would help address the ophthalmic needs of children and improve their future.
A total 165 schoolteachers will be trained on primary eye care and eye screening. They will then conduct eye screening camps in their respective schools to identify children with vision problems. A dedicated team of ophthalmology will visit the schools to support the teachers in the camps. The screened children will be reexamined by the ophthalmic assistant from LEPRA. VAL will also provide surgery, spectacles, medicine or referral services, depending upon the individual cases.
VAL has taken several steps to improve the quality of education for children. It has been supporting about 1,000 Anganwadi centres with additional nutrition. It is also going to provide nutritious midday meals to children of Government-aided schools in partnership with the Naandi Foundation and the district administration.
