Kalahandi residents mourn Deo’s death

The sudden and untimely death of former BJP MP of Kalahandi, Bikram Kesari Deo (59) due to heart attack here on Wednesday, has come as a great shock to people in the district as well as in the State.

Bikram’s elder brother Maharaja Udit Pratap Deo, Birkishore Deo, Bharat Bhusan Deo, Lankeswar Deo and Aditya Bhusan Deo rushed to his residence soon after his death. His wife Nayanshree Devi, who was out of town, also reached Kalahandi. Leaders of different political parties visited his residence to pay their last respects and console his family.

The second son of late Pratap Kesari Deo, also a former MP, Bikram had begun his political career in the 1980s and was first elected to the State Assembly from the Junagarh constituency in 1985. He was re-elected from the seat in 1990 and 1995. In 1999, he first won the Lok Sabha election and repeated his Parliamentary poll success in 2000 and 2004.

On Thursday, when his body was taken for cremation, thousands of people converged on the road to pay tributes. As the funeral procession was on, school and college students and teachers paid floral tributes to him. The people shouted slogans, Bikram Deo Amar Rahe, Amar Rahe. His son Arkesari Deo lit the funeral pyre.

Schools, colleges and markets of the town remained closed as a mark of respect to the departed leader. Condolence meetings were held by the district administration, the Women’s College and different NGOs at their offices. The Kalahandi Bar Association stated that the sudden and untimely death of Deo is an irreparable loss to the district. The court works were also suspended at the second half on Thursday.

BJP leaders, including former MPs Dharmendra Pradhan and Braja Kishore Tripathy, former Minister Manmohan Samal, Rajya Sabha member Rudra Pany, State general secretary Panchanana Rout, district president Goura Chandra Panda and former MLA Basanta Panda, were present during Deo’s last rites. PCC president KP Singh Deo, who is Bikram’s brother-in-law, Bhawanipatna MLA Dusmanta Naik, former MLA Bharat Bemal, Rajendra Bharatee and DCC president Ras Bihari Behera were also present.

BHUBANESWAR: Assembly Speaker Pradip Amat mourned the death of former MP and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Bikram Keshari Deo.

Describing Deo as a very capable leader, the Speaker said he had always fought for the development of Kalahandi. Different projects taken up in Kalahandi due to his efforts was indicative of his love for the people of the district. Amat said his death is a great loss for the people of Kalahandi.

Health Minister Prasanna Acharya said the fact that he was elected three times each as MP and MLA spoke of his popularity. Deo always fought for the rights of the tribals and poor people, he said, adding that his death created a void in Kalahandi.

Higher Education and Tourism Minister Debi Prasad Mishra said Deo, born in a royal family, had accepted social service as the motto in his life. His contribution in spreading education and bringing in social development among the tribals will be remembered, he said.

BHAWANIPATNA: The mortal remains of senior BJP leader Bikram Keshari Deo were consigned to flames today.

In the morning, the funeral procession of Deo’s mortal remains was taken across the town to the royal funeral ground on the banks of Asha Sagar. Leaders cutting across party lines and people of Kalahandi participated in the procession. All business establishments and educational institutions were closed as a mark of respect to the departed soul. The last rites were performed by Deo’s son Arka Kesari Deo. A delegation of BJP leaders including Manmohan Samal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Rudranarayan Pani and Braja Kishore Tripathy attended the funeral. Besides, Minister Puspendra Singhdeo, PCC chief K.P.Singhdeo, Nitesh Gangadev and district officials were present.
