BHAWANIPATNA: The Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre, first of its kind in Orissa, was opened for public on the district headquarters hospital premises in Bhawanipatna yesterday.
The second such centre will be set up in Mayurbhanj district later this month.
This 10-bedded centre has been established to treat Grade III and Grade IV malnourished children for a short period of 10 days. It will be funded by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) with an objective of reducing the infant mortality rate.
The malnutrition cases in the anganwadi centres will be treated by doctors at block level every month and the acute cases will be referred to the peadiatricians in the district headquarters hospital. After treatment, the children would be admitted to the centre for ‘nutritional rehabilitation’.
A child would be provided with scheduled seven course balanced diet of Rs 35 per day as per the diet chat and other medicinal treatments for 10 days. Parents of the child will also be counselled.
The Asha karmi, who will bring malnutrition cases to the centre would be given an incentive of Rs 150 per cases.
“This facility would go a long way on reducing malnutrition cases in Kalahandi,” said Chief District Medical Officer Sushil Chandra Rath.
