Malaria killed 717 in State: Minister

BHUBANESWAR: Malaria has claimed 717 lives in the State during the last three years.In a written reply to a question from Raghuram Padal (BJD), Minister for Health and Family Welfare Prasanna Acharya said in the Assembly today that 11,20,019 people were affected with the disease during the period.The Minister said that the State Government had launched World Bank assisted vector borne disease programme in 13 districts - Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal and Gajapati.To a question from Anant Das (BJD), the Minister said that 255 people died in the State during the last five years due to AIDS. The highest number of 104 deaths were reported from Koraput while 40 persons died in Ganjam.The State Government has received Rs 6,319.21 crore from the World Bank, Centre and other agencies for AIDS control during the last five years, he said.
