Vedanta hold workshop on Bio Medical Waste Management held in Orissa

Lanjigarh: The need for segregating Bio-Medical Waste from general hospital waste and its careful disposal was stressed by Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Chief Operating Officer, Vedanta Aluminium Limited on February 5, 2010.


Addressing the inaugural session of a Union Ministry of Environment and Forests sponsored training and workshop on Biomedical Waste Management at Lanjigarh, Kalahandi, and Dr. Mukesh Kumar said that it was very important to sensitize all sections of the society about biomedical waste and its proper disposal. The two day training and worskshop is being organized by MDC on SHE in association with District Administration, Kalahandi and Vedanta Alumnium Limited. Shri RS Gopalan, Collector, Kalahandi inaugurated the program at conference hall of Vedanta Guest House. He emphasized on cleaning of hospital surrounding to prevent further spread of disease.

Prof. (Dr.) T Venkatesh, Principal Adviser, St. John Medical College, Bangalore; said that proper disposal of medical waste is not only the responsibility of health institutions only, general public has equal responsibility for the same. Dr. S. Rath, CDMO, Kalahandi and Prof. (Dr.) NK Das, Convener, State Level Task Force on BMW Management, SCB Medical College &Hospital, Cuttack, Dr. RC Rout, Head of Health and Safety and Environment of VAL and Dr. Sabita Swain, CMO of VAL were also present.

Prominent professors from St. John Medical College, Bangalore; SCB Medical College, Cuttack, senior functionaries from State Pollution Control Board, CDMOs, academicians and others presented technical papers on BMW management.

More than 70 doctors, paramedical staff connected with Biomedical Waste Management of industrial, private and government hospitals, officials of Urban Local Bodies and government officials dealing on the subject of Kalahandi and Nuapada districts attended the program. The training cum workshop is first of its kind in Kalahandi district.
