Government plans four-day farmers’ convention

BHUBANESWAR: On the defensive over the suicide of farmers, the State Government has decided to organise the State-level farmers’ convention in a massive way for four days from March 5.


Announcing this here today, Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout said that farmers, non-government organisations (NGOs) working in the farm sector, farm equipment manufacturers and sellers and other stakeholders will actively participate in the convention.

All the 30 agriculture technical management agencies (ATMAs) will also participate. Activities of horticulture, fisheries, animal husbandry and other departments will be exhibited on the occasion by the ATMAs.

Besides, seminars will be organised to educate the farmers on farming and other related topics. The convention is being organised by the Agriculture Department since 2008.

The Minister said that different schemes implemented by the State Government will be discussed during the occasion. This includes Centrallysponsored National Food Security Scheme being implemented in 21 districts.

The scheme is being implemented in Balangir, Kalahandi, Keonjhar, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Nuapada, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, Boudh, Deogarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh.

The scheme includes production of seeds, construction of community threshing floor and creating facilities for irrigation. Other schemes implemented by the State Government include Rashtriya Krushi Vikas Yojana and Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Palm and Maize.
