Orissa scorches as mercury crosses 45-degree mark

Orissa continued to be under severe heat wave with the temperature crossing 45 degrees Celsius mark in many parts of the state, a weather department official said Wednesday.


Bhabanipatna town in Kalahandi district, some 400 km from here, recorded 45.4 degrees Celsius, the day's highest in the state, a Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre official said.

Four other towns Sambalpur, Titilagarh, Malkangiri and Sundergarh also saw mercury rising to 45 degrees, he said.

Temperature was comparatively lower in the coastal areas with Puri, Gopalpur, Balasore and Paradip towns recording the maximum temperatures of 33 degrees, 32.2 degrees, 37.7 degrees and 33.5 degrees Celsius respectively.

The state capital Bhubaneswar and nearby Cuttack city recorded 36.0 and 35.7 degrees Celsius respectively.

The official said light rain and thunder shower were likely to occur in isolated places during next 24 hours.
