The Lanjigarh unit of Vedanta Aluminium Ltd has bagged the prestigious The Financial Express —Emergent Venture India (FE-EVI)’s Green Business Leadership Award in Mining and Metal Industry sector based on a study carried out by The Financial Express, Emergent Venture India along with Indian School of Business Hyderabad to recognise the trends and best practices in Climate Change mitigation across key industries of India.
The award was presented by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah at a function held in Delhi on the World Environment Day in presence of environmentalist RK Pachauri.
The study covered nine power intensive industries like cement, mining and metal, power, paper and pulp, oil and gas, iron and steel, information technology and chemicals and fertilisers to identify Green Leaders for each industry. The objective of the study was to raise awareness among the Indian Industry and to provide a benchmark through creation of a Green Leader framework on the basis of best practices across the globe.
Speaking on the occasion, COO of Vedanta Lanjigarh Mukesh Kumar observed that environmental protection and safety is an integral part of Vedanta's business practices. This has been demonstrated by the company being the first Zero Discharge alumina refinery in the country. It is aiming to become the first Zero Waste Refinery in the world by 2015 by utilising all wastes like red mud, lime grit and fly ash. Vedanta Lanjigarh had also recently received the International Safety Award by the British Safety Council.
