Bhubaneswar: Concerned over the high concentration of fluoride content of water in Nuapada district, the Odisha government on Monday decided to take up a long standing programme of 21 water purification projects at an investment of Rs 265 crore. A decision to this effect was taken in a review meeting presided over by chief minister Naveen Patnaik at the State Secretariat here.
It was decided in the meeting that all the households of the state would be provided purified drinking water with pipe water facilities by 2022. As a continued effort, the state government has decided to implement 3,500 pipe water supply project by in three years time.
There is no funds crunch for the projects, Patnaik said, adding that the water supply projects to be implemented on priority basis in dried up areas.
He directed the concerned officials to complete the ongoing projects immediately.
It was know from the meeting that fluoride content in water in some of the districts causes different types of diseases in the state. Such districts include Nuapada, Khurda, Nayagarh, Boudh, Koraput, Kalahandi, Puri and Balasore.
The fluoride content problem is highest in Nuapada district. Of the total 2,355 villages of the district, 905 villages have this problem. Among others, rural development and law minister Bikram Keshari Arukh, chief secretary Tarunkanti Mishra, principal secretary to chief minister Bijay Kumar Patnaik, finance secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra and rural development secretary Rangalal Jamuda were present at the meeting.
