Orissa: Ex-sarpanch attacks divorcee with acid

Expressbuzz, Aug 1, 2010
DIVORCEE of Badkarlakote village under Jayapatna police limits in Kalahandi district sustained burn injuries all over her per¬son after the former sarpanch of the village allegedly threw acid on her late last night after she turned down his proposal.  Reports said the former sarpanch Basudev Majhi allegedly entered the house of Tikemani Naik at about 12.30 am and suddenly attacked her with a bottle of acid and fled. Police are yet to arrest him. She was rushed to the nearby PHC and later shifted to Bhawanipatna headquarters hospital after her condition deteriorated. She is stated to be out of danger.  “After a complaint lodged by Tike¬mani’s father, we have registered a case. The incident took place at around midnight and the accused is absconding,” said Jayapatna PS IIC P K Rana. He said preliminary investi¬gation pointed at the offer of mar¬riage by Basudev being rejected by the woman.  Sources said she tied the knot eight years ago and was staying at her parents’ place after separation from her hus-band. Basudev was allegedly keeping a lustful eye on her. But since he failed to impress her and didn’t get any positive response from her for marriage, he threw acid on her, said the IIC.
