It seems the investors those who are queuing up to sign Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for new thermal power plants stand little chance.
With the Chief Minister in no mood to allow more private companies to set up their shops, chances of signing of more MOU looks bleak, said sources.
Odisha has so far signed 27 MOUs with private promoters envisaging aggregate coal-based power capacity of over 33,000 Mega Watt (MW).
Now it seems to be a Full Stop for the new investors, sources say.
In 2006, Odisha Government signed 13 MOUs with private players, in 2009 six and in 2010 it has already singed eight.
Odisha expects a share of 5,600 MW from the upcoming power plants.
Now many of the upcoming power plants are facing hurdles to set up their facilities.
Prime concern is land acquisition and in the grass root level almost all the Greenfield power projects are facing the hurdles.
Farmers’ Organizations are opposing the land acquisition and several land acquisition endeavours fail to achieve the needful.
While Odisha Government is facilitating the Greenfield power projects, many of the promoters are showing reluctance after signing MOU.
Recently the Chief Minister reviewed the progress so far made by the MOU signing companies.
Marching orders were issued to cancel the MOU, whose progress is found not satisfactory.
Apart from the private players, State Government undertakings OPGC and OTPCL is moving ahead with their plans to set up Brown field and Green Field power plants.
The Union Government is eyeing for 03 ultra mega power projects in the state.
With all such initiatives, Odisha is comfortably placed with respect to power scenario.
Hence under the backdrop, Chief Minister is in no mind to go for further MOUs with investors for setting power plants in the state, said official sources.
