Lift canal system for Kalahandi: Thanks to the Chief Minister and Pushpendra Singh Deo for taking this long standing demand of people of Koksara region

NOTE: Earlier we had been also raising this issue, even recently we had proposed for mega check dam on Tel river near Chhatisgarh-Umarkote border . However, such a mega check dam or barrage can still be beneficial for both Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

BHUBANESWAR: THE State Government will start lift canal system as part of the Upper Indravati Irrigation Project beginning next year.


The work which will commence by second half of 2011 is expected to end by 2013. At least 26,248 hectare land in Koksara block can be irrigated by the system.

It is only after the project gets clearance from the Central Water Commission and Forest and Environment Ministry that work on the project will begin.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today reviewed progress of the project at the State Secretariat. The Koksara Lift Project, as it will be known, is going to entail an investment of Rs 740 crore.

A pump house would be constructed at Hati barrage as part of the project and underground pipelines will be laid for irrigation. Once completed, most of Kalahandi would get irrigation facility.

Report by Orissa Diary correspondent; Bhubaneswar : A high level meeting held in the Odisha Secretariat on Thursday under the Chairmanship of the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik . The Chief Minister approved a proposal for irrigating about 26,248 hectare under drought prone Koksara block in Kalahandi district by drawing water through pumps from the Indravati reservoir.


Under the project, a pump house would be set up near the Hati barrage of Indravati river from where water would be drawn by pipes and released in a canal and then to agricultural fields.

With implementation of the project under the Lift Canal System, the drought-prone Kalahandi district could become an irrigated area in the state .The project named as Koksara Lift Project was approved in the meeting .Targeting to begin work by end of 2011, the project would be completed by 2013.

The work, however, could only start after it received approval from the Central Water Commission (CWC) and clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests .

So far 76,000 hectare of agricultural land was irrigated by using water from Indravati Irrigation project.

"We can irrigate another 25,484 hectare of land by extending both left and right side canals of the Indiravati Project," Secretary Water Resources Department Suresh Mohapatra said the media persons after the meeting.

Among others Minister of Labour and Employment Puspendra Singh Deo, Chief Secretary Bijaya Kumar Patnaik, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Aditya Prasad Padhi, Secretary Water Resources Department Suresh Mohapatra , IIC of Water Resources Harish Chandra Behera were present.
