Demanding relief enhancement to the rain-hit farmers, the District Youth Congress Committee (DYCC) sat on a hunger strike before the Collectorate here on Tuesday led by its president Thrilochan Panigrahi.
It alleged that the State Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, has ignored the development of agriculture in the State during the last 11 years following which 3,000 farmers have committed suicide and even the compensation has not yet been given to the bereaved families. Even 13 farmers have committed suicide recently in the State.
The State Government should include seven more districts in the list of crop damage, the DYCC demanded.
It further demanded that each farmer’s `50,000 agriculture loan should be waived, each bereft family should be compensated with `10 lakhs ex-gratia, the Government should immediately meet the emergent situation from the State Calamity Fund for payment of crop insurance for the current losses, should pay `20,000 per acre of irrigated land, `12,000 for non-irrigated land and `50,000 for the cash crop.
Kalahandi MP Bhakta Charan Das also accused the State Government of blindly toeing the line of industrialisation at the cost of the farmers’ genuine needs and feelings.
He further said that the Central Government schemes are not being properly utilised by the State showing its incapability of spending the funds.
Das also accused that even the BJD MPs did not raise their voice in the recently concluded Parliament session on the farmers’ issue. “Had they voiced, they would have got a huge Central assistance,” Das alleged.
