Ryots await buyers in Kalahandi

The New Indian Express (Bhubaneswar), Nov 30, 2012

Procurement of paddy that started in the district on Monday, has been sluggish. The State Government has set a target to procure 2,32,353 MT of paddy from Kalahandi this crop season.
Besides primary agriculture cooperative societies (PACS), MARKFED, NAFED, TDCC and FCI have been directed to procure paddy from farmers at earmarked procurement centres.
However, as on today, just  17 procurement centres have been opened and only 30,642 quintals of paddy procured. Farmers alleged that apart from PACS, other government agencies like Markfed, FCI, Nafed and TDCC are yet to open their centres. In the last three days, only 755 farmers have sold their paddy.
Sources said, paddy harvesting, cleaning and drying are in progress and procurement is expected to be in full swing by second week of December.
