BHUBANESWAR: The state government plans to irrigate more than 14 lakh hectare arable land by sinking deep tube-wells and setting up lift irrigation (LI) projects. This was revealed during a review meeting by chief minister Naveen Patnaikhere on Friday.
To provide better irrigation facilities to farmers, the state government began installing deep bore-wells at 250 blocks in 26 districts in 2010-11 under Biju Krishak Vikash Yojana. In the next three years, the state plans to sink one lakh tube-wells, which can irrigate 10 lakh more hectare of kharif crop and two lakh hectare rabi crop, a release said.
Similarly, the government plans to set up 174 mega LI points in 15 clusters, which can irrigate 2.14 lakh hectare. The state has allocated Rs 200 crore in this year's budget for these LI projects. Initially, tender process for two projects over Tel river would be finalized this month. These two projects can irrigate 3,500 hectare in Boudh, Sonepur and Kalahandi districts.
