BERHAMPUR: Drinking water crisis hasn't spared residential schools, mainly for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe (SC/ST) children, in southern
Orissa districts. Several school heads discussed the problem with revenue divisional commissioner (RDC, southern division) Satyabrata Sahu at a review meeting recently. About 62 residential schools from the southern Orissa districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput and Kalahandi participated. The headmasters alleged, most of these schools which are run by welfare department, do not get adequate drinking water during summer. Besides, the students do not get text books in time.
"The text books are supplied in the middle of the year. It becomes really difficult for the students to complete their syllabus within time," a headmaster said.
He added, the students could have fared better had they got the text books at the beginning of the academic session.
Sahu, however, promised to take up the matter with authorities concerned and get drinking water and text books. But he warned of action against authorities if the schools can't score at least 60 per cent in the annual HSC examination.
