Bhubaneswar:16/July/2009
Orissa now can take the satisfaction that, so far Per Capita Net State Domestic Product (NSDP) is concerned; it is way ahead of various major states.
Orissa is the third state in the country, where Per Capita NSDP is Rs. 20240 at 2006-07 prices.
A U Singhdeo, Minister Planning & Coordination has revealed in the Orissa Legislative Assembly here on 16 July.
Replying to a question by Rama Chandra Kadam, MLA Koraput, the Minister said that while Haryana is on the top with Rs.49,038, Gujarat has come second with Rs.37,532 at 2006-07 prices.
The state took multi-pronged strategy to achieve the height, said a beaming Minister.
So far investment is concerned; Orissa during last 3 years is on the top leaving behind Gujarat and Maharashtra.
There is currently considerable disparity in the per capita income among states with available statistics showing as many as 10 major states to be below national average.
However the BPL population in the state is 37.91lakh, which makes the state on the poorest radar.
As per the Report of the Planning Commission published in 2004-05, 39.90 per cent of people are in Below the Poverty Line (BPL).
The report of Commission reveals that 21.80 per cent of people are in BPL list in the country.

This information is wrong and Orissa definitely isn't the third state as per NSDP.It's hard to beleive an entire state machinery can't get the economic data right. There are many staes with per capita NSDP of more than 21000 rupees and India's average NSDP is around 29000 aprrox.
It's laugable that a minister gives wrong information in the legislative assmble. If such is the incompetence,
what more can one expect from these people??
