Thousands of activists of the Paribesh Surakhya Sangram Samiti, headed by Hari Majhi, took to the streets of Rupra Road on Sunday protesting against the proposed dumping of bauxite near the railway station here by the Lanjigarh-based Vedanta Aluminum. Notably, the Vedanta planned to make a dump near the station, from which, bauxite will be transported through trucks to the plant’s site at Lanjigarh.
The Niyamgiri Surakhya Samiti, Kalahandi Sachetan Nagarik Manch and Green Kalahandi supported the movement of these activists, who called upon the residents of Rupra Road to fight against the dumping proposal. The leaders alleged that the bauxite unloading near station would pollute the entire area.
Kalahandi MP Bhakta Charan Das, who could not join the protest meeting because of the ongoing Parliament session, addressed the activists over mobile phone.
