Imphal, September 09, 2009: The long cherish dream of the tribal of Manipur having a separate higher study centre with enough seats to enroll increasing tribal students, fulfilled Wednesday with the inauguration of the Regional Centre of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, IGNTU, at its temporarily place at the Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Adimjati Ashram.

Tribal students of Manipur have been demanding a hill campus of the Manipur University or a separate university for the tribal since the take over of the Manipur University by the government of India as it had led to the sharp reduction of the reservation seat of the tribal students seeking admission to the university.

Manipur University was converted into a Central University with effect from 13/10/2005.The Manipur University Act No.54 of 2005 received the assent of the President on 28/12/2005.Since then, the seat reserved for the Scheduled Tribe in the University reduced from 31 percent to 7 percent as per Central reservation policy.

Manipur chief minister, O Ibobi Singh inaugurated the university at its temporary place in Imphal with a function attended by state education minister, L Jayentakumar, tribal development minister, DD Thaissi and works minister, K Ranjit, Phungjathang Tonsing, Manipur University, Vice Chancellor, C Amuba, Vice Chancellor of IGTNU, professor, CD Singh among others.

Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function appealed the tribal particularly and people of the state in general to extend corporation in becoming the university one of the best universities in the north eastern region.

He further said government, taking serious note on the Central government failure to allow implementation state reservation policy which reserved 31 percent for the Scheduled Tribes to the Manipur University, had tried its best to open a separate tribal university in the state.

Since the conversion of the MU into Central University, ST got only 7 percent reservations.

The request of the state was finally heard by the Union Human Resources Development Ministry who agreed to include the proposal in the 100 days porgramme of the UPA government at the centre.

The university will function at the temporary place till the completion of development of permanent campus at Makhan village under Kangpokpi sub-division of Senapati district where government is under process for acquiring 500 acres of land against the actual requirement of 300 acres.

Government decided to acquire 500 acres of land considering for the future expansion of the university, chief minister said seeking cooperation of people particularly from tribal in early completion of the infrastructure development at the permanent site.

In his address, the chief minister also said that his government is giving top priority in education, health and home departments for improving services to the people.

He also said that government is trying to fill up shortage teachers of the government run schools.

He also said that government has taken up works for all round development of education sector by providing all require infrastructure and manpower.

Education minister, L Jayentakumar who presided the function said that considering the importance of education in the development of the society and the state, government is giving outmost important in taking up various developmental works for the education sector.

The session of the University opened today will start from September 15 this year.
