Bhawanipatna (Orissa), Oct 7 (PTI) Senior BJP leader and three-time MP Bikram Keshari Deo passed away at his residence here today, family sources said.

Deo who had a bypass surgery in 1995 died of cardiac aliments, the sources said.

He was 58.

Deo, a member of the Kalahandi royal family, is survived by wife, a son and two daughters.

He was the son of the ruler of erstwhile princely state of Kalahandi, Late Pratap Keshari Deo, also a former MP.

Besides representing Junagarh assembly segment in the Orissa assembly several times, Deo was elected to Parliament thrice in a row from 1998. He was an MP in 12th, 13th and 14 Lok Sabha from Kalahandi Parliamantary constituency.

Former BJP MP of Kalahandi Bikram Kesari Deo on Wednesday passed away at his residence here at the age of 59 following a heart attack. Deo, who belonged to the royal family of Kalahandi, was elected to the State Assembly three times from the Juangarh constituency before being elected as Member of Parliament of Kalahandi three times. His last rites will be performed on Thursday.

Deo’s death was mourned by leaders of all political parties, including BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, PCC president KP Singh Deo, Congress leader and leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh, Planning and Coordination Minister AU Singh Deo, BJP State president Suresh Pujari, leader of BJP in the Assembly KV Singh Deo and BJP national vice-president Jual Oram.

BHUBANESWAR: Senior BJP leader and former Kalahandi MP Bikram Keshari Deo passed away at his residence in Bhawanipatna, over 400 km from here, on
Wednesday. He was 56. He is survived by his widow Pattayetrani Nayanshree Devi, a son and two daughters.

Deo had undergone a bypass surgery in 1995 and died of cardiac arrest, sources said. Deo was born on November 26, 1952, to ruler of the erstwhile princely state of Kalahandi Pratap Keshari Deo, who was also an MP and Kasturika Mohini Devi.

Deo had a long political innings. Besides being elected to the Lok Sabha thrice in 1998, 1999 and 2004, he represented the Junagarh Assembly constituency three times (1985 on a Janata Dal ticket and in 1990 and 1995 as a BJP nominee). He had lost the 2009 Lok Sabha elections to his Congress rival Bhakta Charan Das.

Deo also shouldered such responsibilities as the district youth president Lok Dal/Janata Party and vice president of state BJP. He was also member of different parliamentary panels, including the Committee on External Affairs (1999-2004), Committee on Subordinate Legislation and Financial Committee on Estimates.
