BHAWANIPATNA: The current climate has come as a relief for the cotton farmers of Kalahandi district who have been panicky over the prospects of paddy crop due to a long dry spell and fickle monsoon.
According to the Agriculture Department assessment here yesterday, the harvest is likely to be satisfactory. In the initial phase of kharif season in June and July cotton coverage could not make much headway leading to shortfall in the target.
Against the target of 23,000 hectares, the coverage during the current year is only 18,292 hectares which is 1,057 hectares less than last year. However, the standing cotton crop due to conducive climate is in a better shape and the plants are now in flowering stage.
Deputy Director of Agriculture, Kalahandi circle, Prabasi Sethi said light rain witnessed during the current year has been a blessing for cotton crop in Kalahandi. Cotton is grown on heavy black cotton soil in Kalahandi and needs just light rain to sustain.
Since the cotton is in ‘boll’ formation stage and in an excellent condition, he expressed optimism about comparatively better yield than previous years.
