Bhakta Charan Das has urged the Union Minister for Human Resources Development (MHRD) to set up a National University in Kalahandi.

Former Union Minister and MP Kalahandi in a letter to Kapil Sibal has demanded for a university in this part of KBK to curtail regional disparity.

Mr.Das has echoed the voice of thousands of intelligentsia of the district, who are trying for the same for more than 2 decades.

Leading NROs Digamabara Patra, Madhusmita Panda, Sanjib Kumar Karmee and many others are at the forefront of demanding National University for the area.

Professor Gopabandhu Behera, leading educationist, who has been recently included in the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) is also in the forefront of demanding a Central University for Kalahandi.

Joining with the army of intelligentsia, Mr.Das said as a Special Package on the lines of Long Term KBK Plan as favoured by P V Narasimha Rao, former Prime Minister.

KBK Plan has been able to ameliorate poverty in the most backward zone of the country, said he.

So Mr.Das has urged to MHRD to provide a National University for which land will not be a problem as there is enough space for the varsity.

He said a 800-acres of government land in Kalarapada adjacent to Utkela airstrip and Kesinga railway station is available.

People of Kalahandi were hopeful for getting Central University, but politics played a major role and it was declared to set up at Koraput.

However setting up a National University in Kalahandi will help out the next generation of the most backward region to come up in a big way.

Mr.Das has earlier raised the issue of Central University time and again.

This time he is going to make a big issue out of it as it is hitting the people of Kalahandi most, which suffers from low literacy and poor educational development.
