Capt R Senapati writes to Sam Pitroda on Education

My Dear Sam,

Spring Greetings from Bhawanipatna.

Being a Private Medical Practitioner, I get opportunity to interact with people of different strata. Lately I have been observing the education standard of the Primary & the Upper Primary students of Orissa and I am really disheartened. I asked a Teacher.

"What could we do?" said he, "we are officially instructed to make sure that every one passes the examination or else we are held responsible. if they don't come to the class then we go to their houses and convince/urge them to come to school. Daily I spend an hour or more in just bringing them in. When do I teach? Also, we are to see to it that whether they write the answer correct or not - No one must fail."

What is the meaning of this education - Just passing an exam?

If all are to pass then why conduct an exam?

What do we achieve by making every one pass a class?

Is this how we aim to achieve our literacy target?

Who is making such weird policies?

It raises doubts on the credibility of the policy makers. This way the very educational standard of Orissa will be damaged at the grass root level.

Sam, I implore upon you. Do something. At least as a son of the soil, please intervene. You are a person people will listen to.

My request is - please listen to me?

Regards

Capt R Senapati
