Kalahandi village women denounce police excess

Kalahandi Sachetana Nagarika Manch and Niyamgiri Surakhya Samiti jointly held a meeting on Wednesday in front of the Collectorate protesting the police excess and alleged exploitations at Chhatarpur village under Lanjigarh block participated by around fifty men and women from the village alleging that their peaceful lives have been ruined after the establishment of the VAL

They also protested the arrests of five women of Chhatarpur by Lanjigarh police under Section 395 of the IPC. The women were forwarded to the SDJM court on February 25 where their bail petitions were rejected followed by subsequent rejection by the Sessions court.

The women claimed that the arrested women were innocent and they should be freed from jail.

Reports said that police had lodged an FIR when Vedanta's iron, steel and other metals worth lakhs of rupees had been stolen from its boundary.

Giridhari Patra, Satya Mahar, Rajkishore, Chandra Mahanand, advocate Santosh Mund strongly opposed the police excess. Later, all the villagers met the five arrested women at the District Jail here.
