Maoists threaten villagers not to work for Vedanta

The Maoist have allegedly threatened villagers of Trilochanpur under Lanjigarh block not to attend the Vedanta’s work saying that the industry has been established to destroy the Niyamgiri hill which would devastate their lives.

Reports said that few villagers were engaged in petty works of the industry.

They also allegedly tied the hands of a country liquor brewing unit’s manager, the brewer and one of their colleagues and allegedly threatened them to stop liquor sale in the village.

They also broke roof tiles of the brewing unit.

As per reports, on Monday night, around five women and two men came to the village armed with guns and threatened Vedanta’s former village coordinator Anil Naik, Gorudha Harijan and Balram Goud with dire consequences if they worked further in the industry.

The Maoists conducted a meeting in the village which lasted from 9 pm on Monday night to 4 am on Tuesday.

The villagers told The Pioneer that the Maoists were accompanied by a few Jharnia Kondhs, who had come from the nearest hilly area. They informed that the police had not reached and conducted any inquiry in the village after the incident.

However, Kalahandi SP Sudha Singh admitted the presence of Maoists in Trilochanpur village saying the investigation is on.
