Vedanta gets public support on Kranti Diwas

On the occasion of Kranti Diwas, pro-industry activists belonging to the Lanjigarh Anchalik Vikas Parishad took out a Sapath Yatra (oath rally) here on Monday.

A group of anti-Vedanta activists, which had decided to take out a procession to mark the occasion, postponed their programme later.

Fearing collapse of law and order in the region, the IIC of Lanjigarh had earlier reported to the sub-divisional magistrate about the congregation of members of two groups in support and protest of VAL along with the public near the main gate of Vedanta Aluminium Limited.

The sub-collector imposed a curfew under Section 144 of the CrPC in the region and ordered the IIC to disperse people gathering near the main gate of VAL and within a radius of 200 metres of the plant premises.

Holding a rally on the main road, the pro-industry people took a oath to chase away the brokers of foreign NGOs and declared they would never allow them to loot the country and play with the future of Kalahandi.

President of Lanjigarh Anchalik Vikas Parishad, Sridhara Pesnia told The Pioneer that foreign NGOs and its brokers in our country are major threats to industrial development. “We will not tolerate interference in Lanjigarh anymore when VAL is sufficiently improving its periphery,” he said. Vedanta will be established here at any cost, he demanded.

Though the local supporter of the company lobby for the company recently committee headed by N.C.Saxena given a report about the reality of the situation at Niyamgiri. This report has 123 pages with beautiful photographs so difficult to send as attachment and can be downloaded from following link.

Last point of the executive summary for your ready reference.

· The Vedanta Company has consistently violated the FCA, FRA, EPA and the Orrisa Forest Act in active collusion with the state officials. Perhaps the most blatant example of it is their act of illegally enclosing and occupying atleast 26.123 ha of Village Forest Lands within its refinery depriving tribal, dalits and other rural poor of their rights.

In view of the above this Committee is of the firm view that allowing mining in the proposed mining lease area by depriving two Primitive Tribal Groups of their rights over the proposed mining site in order to benefit a private company would shake the faith of tribal people in the laws of the land which may have serious consequences for the security and well being of the entire country.

This report is a good blow to Vedanta and all those who favoured. People at Niyamgiri are optimistic and feel government will note of all the points and implement the report properly.
