Report by Orissa Diary correspondent; Bhubaneswar: The Khurda district administration is gearing up to stop the practice of animal sacrifice during Dusshera at Maa Bhagabati temple of Banapur.

This came after the High Court in a significant order asked the State government to direct all district magistrates and SPs to sensitise people against animal sacrifice which is still being practiced in some Shakti Peethas in the state.

The district  administration has initiated a number of adequate preventive measures like installing cameras at various places inside the temple. Moreover, it is also contemplating to enforce prohibitory orders at the site.

On the other hand, the priests and other staff of the Bhagabati temple have clearly stated that under no circumstances the age-old tradition be stopped.

Similar were the views of former president of Bhagabati temple committee who has also supported the animal sacrifice at the temple.

Hundreds of animals are being slaughtered in various Shakti Peethas including the famous Manikeswari Peetha in Bhawanipatna, Patneswari temple in Patnagad, Rakshya Kali temple in Bhadrak, Dakshinakali temple in Biragovindpur and various other temples in Puri.

In Bhagabati temple of Banapur hundreds of animals are sacrificed at the altar on the day of Mahanabami puja to propitiate the goddess.

The State government had been sensitising people against the age-old practice and the effort has been yielding desired results in many parts of the State. However, the practice continues unabated in other sacred shrines.

A PIL has also been filed in the High Court seeking ban on the animal sacrifice across the state.
