Diarrhoea is back with a vengeance in Kurli Panchayat of Bissam Cuttack block.
Situated in the Niyamagiri Hill range, Batiguma, Patlamba and Janjudi villages have been in the killer’s grip claiming Latudi Sikaka (30 male), Mani Wadaka (10 male), Kani Sikaka (28 male) and Putuli Pusika (20 female), all from Batiguma village, Hundali Jalika (50 female) and Murada Kadraka (30 male) from Patlamba village and Kama Huika (28 male) from Janjudi village during the last 10 days. While 10 others are seriously ill at the Christian Hospital and six at the Government PHC are reportedly undergoing treatment.
During the last cholera deaths in Kahipur, Kalyan Singpur and Gudari blocks, the reasons were stated to be unsafe drinking water, ignorance of tribals and blind belief.
It was the rainy season and hence the health service could not reach quickly; but the recent deaths have raised the eyebrows of the local gentries.
The administration is yet to come out with the reasons of death which is generally unusual during this season. Of course, the area got traversed by the recent low pressure. According to the local intelligentsia, food insecurity is the prime reason which leads to consumption of unsafe edible stuff and finally to the gastroenteritis diseases.
