BHUBANESWAR: The state government has asked Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) to submit a feasibility report on the proposal of Congress MP, Bhakta Charan Das, to upgrade the institute at Kalahandi to the second agriculture university in the state, officials said on Monday.

The government's response came after union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar in a letter sent to CM Naveen Patnaik suggested to examine Das's proposal favourably.

"The request of Bhakta Charan Das appears reasonable," Pawar said in his letter sent to Naveen in October.

Das argued that it was required to upgrade the college as Kalahandi, despite being a backward area, has emerged as one of the top producers of rice, cotton and pulses in the state and required advanced technology to meet the growing demand in the coming years.
