Bhawanipatna: Crops on at least 43,056 hectare have been estimated to have been damaged inKalahandi district due to Phailin.
In the kharif season, farmers had cultivated paddy (dalua rice) in 1,90,000 hectare. Preliminary survey put the crop loss on more than 4,300 hectare.
Cotton was cultivated on 43,050 hectare and gusty wind affected standing crop on 8,763 hectare. Cotton crop was also affected by pest attack in heavy downpour in the district, following Phailin. Similarly maize was grown on 17,052 hectare and ripe crop on more than 4,000 hectare has been damaged.
Although preliminary survey estimated crop loss at around 25%, district officials are expecting more damage.
"Our officials have gone to fields to assess loss and the final crop loss report would be submitted to the government soon," said deputy director of agriculture Kailash Pradhan.
As many as 598 villages in 136 gram panchayats have been affected by Phailin. The loss has been reported mostly from Narla, Madanpur Rampur, Bhawanipatna, Karlamunda and Lanjigarh block in the district.
