Why not an IIM at Burla-Sambalpur-Jharsuguda (BSJ) region?

Orissa likely to miss IIM bus

Orissa is on the top list of the investors.

And Capital City of the State is the one of the 3 choicest places in India for doing business easily.

Doing Business in India Report of the World Bank favoured Orissa in big way.

However for Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), the state is not a favoured destination for setting up a B-School, lamented a former Director of XIMB.

In fact Orissa is the most suitable place for setting up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), opined he.

Lack of political initiative and absence of any pressure from the state has sealed the fate of the state so far getting an IIM, which is much needed here.

While States like Jharkhand and Chhatisgarh are on the priority list of MHRD for setting up of IIMs, Orissa is no where in the picture, said a senior mandarin.

MHRD in the Eleventh Five Plan assured IIMs to Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhatisgarh, Harayana, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya.
Of these, an IIM was started in Shillong last year.

And recently MHRD has announced to start IIMs immediately in Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Haryana and Tamil Nadu.

In 2007, Naveen Patnaik had urged the Prime Minister to open an IIM in the state.

In a letter to Man Mohan Singh, the Chief Minister stressed the need for opening a high standard management school in shape of an IIM in Orissa owing to rapid industrialisation in the state.

After that intelligentsia of the state raised their demand for IIM and lot of memorandum was presented to MHRD and PMO for the purpose.

However nothing has materialised till date and once again Orissa is likely to miss the bus of IIM.

Sources in MHRD reveal that the Ministry is at present preparing itself for seven new IIMs to the Cabinet.

So it is high time for the state to raise its demand for an IIM in Orissa, said a former Chief Secretary.
