Times of India, Sept 8, 2009

BHUBANESWAR: Unhygienic and stinking premises, unclean and tattered linens and poor quality food in government hospitals may soon become things of
the past. The state government has decided to improve the quality of healthcare facilities and upgrade six district hospitals to ISO 9001-2008 standards. Major services in most hospitals will also be outsourced to private firms.

The six hospitals to be upgraded for ISO certification include Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar and district headquarters hospitals at Jajpur, Koraput, Balasore, Baripada and Sambalpur. At present, only Puri district headquarters hospital is the only government-run health centre to get the ISO 9001-2008 certificate for quality service delivery in minimum time frame. "NRHM will extend financial assistance to these six hospitals for the development of infrastructure and central drug warehouse and to set up special sick neo-natal care unit," state mission director of NRHM G Mathivathanan said.
